Young people between the ages of 14 and 19 are invited to learn firsthand how exciting the job of firefighting can be, by becoming Fire Explorers with the Franklin Fire Department!
Members learn about fire, rescue, and emergency medical services response in a safe, controlled, educational, and fun way.
Each member is issued a set of personal protective equipment and is trained how to properly use it. Following an introductory training program, Fire Explorers work side by side with Franklin Firefighters, and respond to real emergencies with them to provide assistance by performing routine, supervised tasks.
Explorers are not permitted to enter burning buildings or take part in any dangerous activities. They do, however, perform vital tasks on fire scenes. Explorers help exchange SCBA cylinders for firefighters when they need a new air cylinder, assist EMS personnel with taking vital signs and keeping records of firefighters’ medical conditions, and provide assistance in returning apparatus to service after the fire has been extinguished.
Franklin Fire Explorers meet on Saturdays at the Franklin Fire Department Training Center on Century Ct. At every meeting, members receive training on a firefighting topic, including:
- Fire Cause & Origin
- Hose Handing
- Ladders
- Sprinkler & Alarm Systems
- Vital Signs & Scene Safety
- Self-contained Breathing Apparatus
- Firefighter Rehabilitation
- Ventilation
- Forcible Entry
- CPR
You do not have to reside in Franklin or even in Williamson County to be a member. If you are interested in joining the Franklin Fire Explorers, please contact Firefighter David Konstant at david.konstant@franklintn.gov.
