The City of Franklin conducts Food Service Establishment inspections to identify grease control equipment installed at each facility and identify fats, oils and grease (F.O.G.) impacts to the City's Sanitary Sewer System. We initiated this program to insure proper disposal of animal fats (cooking grease), vegetable oils, and to prevent Sanitary Sewer System backups.

The objective of this program is to prevent sanitary sewer overflows and identify significant deficiencies that will cause blockages or impacts to the City's Sanitary Sewer System. The goals of the City of Franklin F.O.G. Program is to work effectively to properly maintain the system from the property's drain to the Water Reclamation Facility (Wastewater treatment plant/Sewer Treatment Plant). If waste is disposed of correctly, the City Sanitary Sewer System can handle them without any problem. Cooking grease/oil is an example of waste that the Sanitary Sewer System cannot handle, and therefore should not be put down the drain. The City needs homeowners and business owners to do their part to maintain the Sanitary Sewer System because repeated maintenance and repairs due to Fats, Oils and Grease (F.O.G) are disruptive to residences and businesses alike.

The City requires grease generating establishments to correctly install, operate and maintain properly sized and designed grease interceptors. These grease interceptors must be routinely cleaned to insure proper operation. This equipment works by separating the grease and oils from the water. Greasy water enters the interceptor through a vented flow control fitting that regulates the flow of the water. The water then passes over a baffle that separates the grease, fats and oils. The grease floats to the top of the interceptor and accumulates until it is removed. The water continues to flow to the City’s sanitary sewer system.

By working together, we can minimize the negative impact that grease has on the city sewer system. Recent studies show that most of the grease that is causing damages to the sewer system is coming from single-family, apartment and condo residents. The repairs to the sanitary sewer system can be costly for the rate payers. At times the damage is limited to localized clogs in the pipes of the residence, which can also be very costly for the homeowner or those who are renting. That is why it is not a good idea to pour grease down your kitchen drain or any other sewer pipe.

THE SOLUTION

After you are done cooking, pour the hot grease into a metal can, let it cool down, then you can throw it into the regular trash. So remember, grease is the word. Do your part and help to minimize the negative impact / of grease in our sanitary sewer system
