Pavement Rejuvenator:

Roads break down over time, but a pavement rejuvenator developed by the asphalt industry can delay that process. This product is applied on newer asphalt in years 0-5 before any cracking begins in the roadway surface. Most of these products are environmentally friendly, have a quick cure/dry time of usually 1 to 2 hours and with a very small tracking possibility after the curing process.

At an average cost of $1.40 per square yard, rejuvenators are a cost-effective way to extend the life of a roadway by roughly 3-5 years.

Rejuvenators can be applied at least twice in the early stages of the asphalt life cycle. Typically, the first application is applied in years 0-5 and the second application is applied 5-6 years later. In addition to preventative maintenance, rejuvenators should only be used to prevent early oxidation in the asphalt roadway surface, joint cracking, stress cracking and other asphalt deterioration issues.

A rejuvenator can be used on most roadway surfaces retaining most of the skid resistance after initial cure time.

According to a study completed by the Federal Highway Administration entitled “Prevention is the Cure,” the use of rejuvenators is an easy and cost-effective way to delay roadway breakdowns and further postpone major construction.

Best Practices

  • The surface that will receive the seal should be cleaned and prepared.
  • Seal cracks ¼” or greater after application.
  • Allow the rejuvenator to cure before opening to traffic
