Hiring Process

1) How to apply: When FPD is hiring, complete and submit an online application and provide all required documentation to the City of Franklin HR Department by the established application deadline.

2) Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in 3 phases of the testing process on Test Day (they must pass each phase before advancing to the next):

  • Written Exam
  • Physical Ability Test
  • Panel Interview

3) Applicants are required to RSVP at policersvp@franklintn.gov with their chosen test date, at which time they will receive test day details and instructions.

4) Applicants who complete all phases of the testing process will be ranked on a Certification List to assess all candidates’ education, experience, certifications, and panel interview scores. The Certification List is valid for 6 months and as vacancies occur during this period, candidates will receive conditional job offers.

5) Job offers are contingent on passing a polygraph examination, pre-employment physical & drug screen, a psychological evaluation, and full background investigation.

6) Once all pre-employment tests are completed and passed by the candidates, start dates are confirmed with the candidates and the job offer is no longer conditional.

Academy & Training

 Entry-Level Police Officer Trainee:

Police recruits with no law enforcement experience spend about 8 to 10 weeks in in-house training prior to beginning field training, which is 14 weeks long. These recruits will also complete a certifying state basic police academy, which is 10 weeks long. This academy requires the trainee to spend stay overnight over the course of the academy, and home on weekends.

Lateral POST Certified Police Officer:

 Tennessee POST certified lateral officers spend about 4 to 6 weeks in in-house training prior to beginning field training, which can last from 8 to 14 weeks.

Out of state POST certified lateral officers spend about 6 to 8 weeks in in-house training prior to beginning field training, which can last from 8 to 14 weeks.

Pay & Benefits:

Starting Salary

  • Entry-level/Police Officer Trainee (Non-POST Certified): $60,000
  • Lateral/POST Certified Police Officer: $65,000
  • Pay Supplements:
  • DIVE, SWAT, and Crisis Negotiations Teams: $2/hour counts towards OT
  • Honor Guard: $1/hour counts toward OT
  • Extra Duty Pay: $50/hour-$85/hour paid through City payroll and counts toward retirement
  • Shift Differential Pay: 7% added to base pay when working between 2p-9p and 10% added to base pay when working between 9p-7a
  • On-Call Pay: $250/week when required On-Call

0-1 years 3 weeks (6.67 hours/month) plus first week front loaded upon hire

1-4 years 3 weeks (10 hours/month)

5- 9 years 4 weeks (13.33 hours/month)

10-14 years 4.5 weeks (15.33 hours/month)

Meet Chief Deb Faulkner

Chief Deborah Faulkner leads the 143 men and women who make up the Franklin Police Department. These dedicated officers and civilian staff serve our customers with a professionalprogressive, and responsive approach to modern-day policing.

Prior to joining the Franklin Police Department in 2014, Chief Faulkner was Tennessee’s first Inspector General. A retired Metropolitan Nashville Police Officer, with more than 30 years of service to Nashville, Faulkner came up through the ranks, serving in Metro’s Patrol Division and various other assignments before retiring from the MNPD at the rank of Deputy Chief. She has her bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Memphis; her master’s in Criminal Justice from Middle Tennessee State University; and, her doctorate in Human Development Counseling from Vanderbilt University.

Chief Faulkner is a board member of the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police (TACP). She is a graduate of Leadership Franklin, Leadership Nashville, and Leadership Middle Tennessee. Chief Faulkner is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy and past president of the Tennessee Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates. She has served as an adjunct faculty member at Trevecca University, Cumberland University, and Tennessee State University where she has taught classes in Sociology, Criminal Deviancy, and the Management of Law Enforcement Agencies.

With community service as a top priority, Chief Faulkner is a former Board Chair for the Fifty Forward Board, YWCA, and the Susan G. Komen Nashville Affiliate. She has also served on the boards of the Girl Scouts, Goodwill, Catholic Charities, CABLE, and Building Lives of Vets. She currently serves on the board for Leadership Franklin. 

Chief Faulkner is a recipient of the Athena Award, and was also inducted into the Academy for Women of Achievement.  She received the Girl Scout’s Volunteer Award, CABLE’s Spirit of Leadership Award, the Molly Todd Cup, and the Fifty Forward Harriet Foley Leadership Award. In 2024, she received the prestigious Chief Joe Casey Award from the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police.
