  • FFD reviews fire protection/fire sprinkler plans in accordance with the edition of NFPA 13 referenced in the currently adopted International Fire Code.  Plans should be designed accordingly.
  • Allow up to 20 working days for new submissions and revisions/corrections with significant issues.
  • Allow up to 10 working days for review of revised/corrected fire protection plans.

The following issues have been known to cause delays in the approval process.  Although each of these may not be pertinent to every project, most should be considered:

Fire Sprinkler Plans

  • Fire sprinkler plans (underground and aboveground) must be submitted in both CAD (.dwg) format and Portable Document Format (.pdf) due to the type of review and archiving process.
  • Plans for new systems must include a valid two-hydrant fire flow test (full demand) conducted no more than six (6) months before the plan submission date.

Fire Protection Plans

  • For a fire protection plan checklist, click HERE.
  • Plans must contain the name and contact information of the designer.
  • Plans should contain State of Tennessee licensing information where appropriate.
  • Plans must include manufacturers’ data-sheets and calculations.
  • Plans must include a brief scope-of-work statement.
  • All plan revisions must be clouded with a delta note.

Site and Development Plans

  • Provide a valid water flow test indicating 1,500 gpm at 20 psi is available at the project site.
  • Provide connectivity proactively to other streets and/or private property through cross access easements.
  • Provide fire apparatus access within 150 ft. of all part of the building.  Access roads must be all-weather capable of supporting the weight of fire apparatus.
  • Fire department access into and through a site must be verified by providing an autoturn drawing in the site plans.
  • Consider a master addressing plan early.
  • Provide a fire sprinkler lateral for all buildings 5,000 gross SF and larger.
  • Provide a Fire Department Connection (FDC) on the address/front side of the building.  Provide a fire hydrant within 150 ft. of the FDC for sprinklered buildings and within 400 ft. of non-sprinklered buildings.
  • Locate hydrants on the public water main where possible.
  • Locate hydrants near intersections for better visibility.
  • Submit to the appropriate water utility for a preliminary review.
