Please read guidelines prior to submittal
1) Burn Permit Application (Not required for backyard fire pits)
- Residential brush and trash burning is prohibited. The City's Sanitation and Environmental Services Department collects yard waste/brush from homeowners. For more information click HERE or call (615) 794-1516.
- Campfires and bonfires – Permit required. Permits are issued for campfires and bonfires in approved recreational settings. They are subject to inspection. A permit is NOT required for backyard fire pits.
- Construction burning – Permit required. Several requirements must be met, including having a trench burner/air curtain destructor on site, which prevents the spread of smoke.
- Retire worn, tattered flags with respect and dignity by taking advantage of several Williamson County drop-off locations. Deposited flags are ceremoniously disposed of year-round by either Franklin Boy Scout Troop 137 or by the American Legion Post 215. For details click HERE.
2) Tent/Canopy Permit Application
- A temporary operational permit is required for tents having an area in excess of 200 square feet or covered canopy in excess of 400 square feet. No permit is required for tents used exclusively for recreational camping purposes.
- All tent fabric shall meet the flame “propagation performance criteria” specified in NFPA 701. Tents bearing a CPAI-84 are tested only for recreational tents and generally cannot be used in public assembly or special event functions. Outdoor patio heaters fueled by propane are generally not permitted. If the tent has removable sides which are used during an event (weather, etc.), illuminated exit signs and emergency lighting may be required. Your event coordinator or tent company may be responsible for ensuring compliance with local fire and life safety codes. Tent permits are not valid until a site inspection is performed. Failure to obtain a permit/inspection may result in the removal of your tent.
3) Blasting Permit Application (State of TN and FFD permits required)
- While the State of Tennessee regulates all construction blasting, FFD also requires a permit which serves to notify us of blasting taking place within the city. It is valid for 90 days. If you intend to blast longer, you must resubmit the application. If you have questions about construction blasting, please contact the State Fire Marshal’s office at (615) 741-2981 (ext. 6). If you have a blasting complaint, please click HERE.
4) Commercial Fireworks Display Permit Application (State of TN permit required, which must have local jurisdiction approval)
- The State of Tennessee regulates fireworks. The applicant completes the state application and forwards it to the local jurisdiction for a signature. One thing we ask for, which the state does not, is a site plan of the display area. Once we sign off on the state form, we send everything back to the applicant to submit to the state. Please contact Assistant Fire Marshal Jonathan Dye with questions at 615-550-6749. Consumer fireworks, including sparklers and sky lanterns, are prohibited in Franklin.
