Project Description

The primary purpose of this project is to provide an additional east-west crossing of Interstate 65 in the Goose Creek Area.  The preliminary discussions about need for this project occurred well prior to 2010.  The need for this additional crossing became evident in 2014, when a crash damaged the bridge structure at the Goose Creek Bypass interchange, forcing its closure for several months.  This project will not provide direct access to I-65.  It will connect Old Peytonsville Road and Long Lane via an overpass.    As a part of their I-65 Phase 2 Widening project, TDOT agreed to construct the bridge piers, which would be located with the right-of-way for I-65, for this planned overpass.  This was done in an effort to limit impacts to interstate traffic during the future construction of the City's project.  TDOT completed their construction in 2016.  This Bridge & Connector project was fully approved to proceed as a part of the Capital Investment Program (CIP) prioritization that was completed by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) in 2019.  This was the only project in that CIP cycle to receive unanimous support from the BOMA members.

Aside from the overpass, this project also includes improvements to Old Peytonsville Road and Long Lane.  On the west side of I-65, The remaining unimproved section of Old Peytonsville Road will be widened to 3 lanes with curb & gutter drainage, a sidewalk on the city side of the project, bike lanes, and street lighting.  On the east side of I-65, a significant portion of the currently unimproved section of Long Lane, which is adjacent to the Williamson County Agricultural Center, will also be widened to 3 lanes with curb & gutter drainage, sidewalks on both sides of the road, and bike lanes.  This project will also remove the existing 90-degree curve on Lane that is adjacent to I-65.  This will be accomplished be constructing an intersection where the new Connector meets Long Lane.
