HAVING A YARD SALE?

The City of Franklin requires a permit for all yard sales conducted in the city limits of Franklin. The permit fee is $5.00. 

Yard sale permits are available by the following methods:

  1. In person at Suite 141 at City Hall.
  2. Print a yard sale permit form and mail with check to P O Box 705, Franklin, TN 37065-0705

While the City of Franklin does not prohibit private citizens from conducting a yard sale, there are certain rules and requirements which need to be observed.

Guidelines for holding yard sales in the City of Franklin:

Reference Section 5.3.5.E and 15.18 of the Franklin City Zoning Ordinance

Garage/yard sales are intended to allow for the occasional sale of miscellaneous household goods in the garage or yard of a dwelling.  Garage/yard sales shall:

  • Be subject to issuance of a garage sale permit by the Billing and Licensing Department prior to the sale;
  • Have the permit posted in a location that is visible from the public right of-way during the sale;
  • Not take place on lots beyond the property specified in the permit
  • Be limited to a maximum of four per dwelling per year. Members of more than one dwelling may join in obtaining a permit for a sale to be conducted at the dwelling of one of the persons indicated on the permit;
  • Not exceed a maximum duration of two consecutive days per sale or more than eight total days per calendar year;
  • Be limited to the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.;
  • Not negatively affect surrounding properties in terms of noise, boisterous conduct, trash, parking, or impede the flow of traffic on nearby streets. 

The permit may be revoked, or refused, if the application contains false, fraudulent or misleading statements.

Signage - Signs not meeting the following will be confiscated

  • Signs are either On Premises (located on the property where the sale is held) or Off Premises ( a location other than the place where the yard sale is held).
  • Signs are not allowed on public rights of way and may not be posted, attached, nailed, stapled, etc. to any utility pole, sign, post, street sign, medians, etc. Anything in front of or on a light pole or traffic sign is not permitted.
  • You are allowed one On Premises sign with a maximum of 6 square feet per side.
  • Off Premises signs must be a maximum of 6 square feet per side and located on private property only. Off Premises signs should be mounted on stakes and, after written permission is obtained, placed in the yards of private individuals. Balloons are not allowed on directional signs.
  • Off Premises signs may be put up no earlier than three (3) days prior to the event.
  • All signs must be removed by the close of sale activities or by the end of daylight the last day of the sale.
