Franklin, TN – An apartment fire on Thursday evening (1/31/2019) started after a kitchen appliance cord was draped across a stove burner that was left on, causing the cord to ignite, according to Franklin Fire Investigator Lt. Bill Almon.  He ruled the fire accidental.

The Franklin Fire Department responded shortly after 8 p.m. to the Shadow Green apartment complex on Toll House Circle, after the resident discovered the fire and called 911.

They arrived to find moderate smoke inside the apartment.  The fire had been extinguished by the resident prior to their arrival, with minimal damage.  No one was injured, and no additional units were damaged in the three-story, 30-unit building.

Almon said the resident was using a pressure cooker to cook food.  She placed the appliance on the stovetop and stretched the cord across a burner to plug it into an electrical outlet, without realizing the burner was turned on.

Firefighters checked the apartment and building for fire extension and helped to ventilate smoke from the apartment.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fires and fire injuries, causing 48% of home fires.
