Franklin, TN – Today’s shift for two Franklin Police Officers started out like any other, but ended with a convicted felon and interstate crook in cuffs.

Business checks are a matter of routine for officers working the City’s four patrol zones, and today was no exception. Officers Ben Jones and Nick Grandy checked out on the radio for a walk-through of Academy Sports at 1915 Mallory Lane. While inside, they were approached by a store loss prevention officer who told them about an area-wide alert regarding a large theft that occurred this morning in Decatur, Alabama. That alert contained information about the suspect and getaway vehicle, so the officers used an unmarked car to stake out the Cool Spring area parking lot. Two hours later, that vehicle from Alabama drove right in to the lot where officers were conducting surveillance.

The driver, and lone occupant, 34-year-old Louis Orlando Harmon of Lake Charles, Louisiana, had a suspended license and was arrested. Inside of the vehicle that he was driving, officers recovered 28 pairs of stolen athletic shoes and 25 athletic shirts valued at nearly $5,000. Also found in the car were tools used to remove sensor tags and directions to numerous Academy Sports stores in surrounding states.

Harmon, a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history that includes drug, theft, and assault charges, is wanted in Louisiana and Texas. He is in custody at the Williamson County Jail, charged with Felony Theft, Possession of an Anti-Theft Device Tool, and Driving on a Suspended License. His bond was set at $15,500, but he will be held even if he posts that bond, for Texas authorities.
