Joe YorkJoseph York was born on February 17th, 1949 in the Dan German Hospital on the corner of 4th Avenue South and Church Street, in the City of Franklin. He was raised on the family farm in the Peytonsville community, where his family raised grain, tobacco, and ran a small dairy. Joe graduated from Franklin High School in 1966. After graduation, he continued working on the family farm until 1968. Later that year, he joined the Navy. Joe entered into active duty service in January of 1969, and in April was stationed on a United States Destroyer, the USS Sarsfield. While aboard ship, he toured several continents and countries; including South America, the Middle East.

In May of 1972, Joe’s ship was deployed to Vietnam to assist in the war effort. Mr. York was honorably discharged in December of that year, and upon his return home he began working in construction with a contractor based in Nashville, TN, building roads, parking lots, etc. Joe continued working in construction for over twenty years.

In October of 1994, he came to work for the City of Franklin as the City’s first Road Inspector, serving in that capacity until 1999. Upon the retirement of the former Street Director, Joe was appointed interim Street Director for a period of six months. At the end of that time, the City Administrator recommended to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen that Mr. York be made the full time Street Department Director, this recommendation was approved unanimously. Joe is married to Barbara York, who has worked for the City of Franklin for over thirty years and they have two adult children, and several well-loved dogs and cats. Joe continues to lead the Street Department and serve the City of Franklin proudly.
